Sediment Control - Fiber Rolls

Fiber rolls, commonly called rice straw wattles, are a very effective sediment control measure.  Testing done at San Diego State University shows up to a 58% reduction in sediment leaving the project site compared to the control section when straw wattles are used..

Earth Saver™ wattles come in a variety of sizes.  The standard is a 9” diameter, with 12” and 20” diameters available for more severe applications.  Rice straw wattles are contained by a photodegradable netting which is designed to last at least two construction seasons.  A biodegradable and a burlap netting are also available.

Rice straw wattles, when properly installed, reduce the rate of water flow, absorbing water and filtering sediment.  A significant amount of sediment will drop out of the water behind the wattle during a rain event.  Rice straw is weed free and naturally biodegradable, enhancing the soil and helping vegetation become established.  On steep slopes, wattles used in conjunction with a properly designed and installed erosion blanket results in an extremely effective BMP.

Excelsior Logs are available in 9”, 12” and 18” diameters.  Excelsior Logs perform a filtering function.  These products are a non-food source and are weed free.  Excellent when used as check dams, site perimeter protection and to break up the slope length.

Coir Fiber Logs.  Coir logs are manufactured using coir fiber that is very fine.  Normal density is 7 lb/cubic foot and 12” diameter.  This log will last on a construction site three or more years.  This product is frequently used for stream, pond or river bank protection.  Aquatic plants are normally planted in the log and the root structure takes over the erosion protection job as the log biodegrades.
